Here we go again…

This mixed messaging from the government is INFURIATING, particularly given how over the last 18 months, we all have demonstrated that we can work effectively and successfully in different ways.

Why should being physically present in the office be a pre-requisite for success? Does this view not further negatively impact marginalised groups in the workforce who need flexibility?

BUT there is an element of truth in Sunak’s rather clumsy wording.

It can be very challenging to make sure that people who are not visible don’t miss out on opportunities for progression and development. And at the early stages of your career, this is undoubtedly huge benefit in building relationships and interacting with peers (though does this need to be done in an office environment- ‘do not under-estimate the power of technology’?)

It’s up to organisations to find an approach which treats people equitably.

That involves training and coaching managers, looking at what tasks are best suited to the office and being purposeful about creating opportunities for networking and exposure.

And ultimately, judging by output… NOT when and where you work.
